BLACKPOOL social services are closing down facilities at yet another Blackpool care home.

But bosses say it will mean an improvement in the level of care provided for the 12 adults who attend the day care centre.

The executive of Blackpool Borough Council yesterday agreed to stop using Beechfield Day Centre, Whitegate Drive (pictured here),because the facilities are no longer adequate.

Instead the service will be moved to a purpose-built facility at Langdale House, Langdale Road in Mereside.

And more than £100,000 is being spent on building an extension to the existing facilities.

The two rooms and an annexe at Beechfield Day Centre in which the day care centre is based were rented by the council from cerebral palsy charity SCOPE at a cost of around £12,000 per year. Executive member for social services Sue Wright said she was very proud of the move.

"I'm proud that this is not about the diminution of services," she said.

"I know that people are concerned about it when things change, but the people who use this centre will be moving to a purpose built facility.

"We are already committed to more than £100,000 of expenditure in our budget on improvements to Langdale House."

Coun Wright went on to say that she was sure the transport system which currently brings day care patients to the centre will adapt to taking the patients to Mereside, so no one would be stranded, unable to get to the centre.

The council are expected to give the three months notice required to Beechfield Centre in the near future before the move can take place.
