I NOTE that it is proposed that control of the traffic warden system is to be taken from the police and either the council or a private company will run it for the profitable income it will derive for council coffers (LET, January 18).
All very well if all motoring infringements are included, because at present many offences are completely ignored -- such as parking on double yellow lines (excluding orange badge holders); opposite or adjacent to a bus stop; in a taxi rank; within the wavy lines at pedestrian crossings and the wrong way in a one way street. One also sees cars parked less than 15 yards from a junction; going through traffic lights on amber and on red and parked next to a 'ghost' island, making it impossible to pass without entering the island.
We also see drivers placing children in back seats of cars from the 'traffic' side of the road and talking with door open on traffic side.
No doubt readers can come up with dozens more instances of dangerous practice.
It will be interesting to see how many millions can be extracted under the new system to swell the depleted council funds.
FRANCIS CROSS (Mr), Royds Street, Accrington.
