A MOTHER who feared her son might need a third life-saving kidney operation today made an emotional appeal for the public to carry donor cards amid worries people would be deterred after the Alder Hey body parts scandal.

Parveen Anwar, of Leamington Road, Blackburn, has begged parents not to be put off from donating their childrens' organs, despite hundreds of youngsters' bodies being stripped of their organs for research without parental consent at the Liverpool hospital.

Parveen knows only too well the agonising wait for a life-saving organ after watching her son, Faizan, 14, undergo weeks of intensive treatment when his body rejected the kidney donated by his father eight months ago in his second operation.

She feared the teenager, who had his first transplant when he was a toddler, may have to undergo a third operation and appealed to the public to carry donor cards.

Her second plea today comes 24 hours after Health Minister Alan Milburn said he was to call an emergency meeting with health chiefs, unions and business leaders to prevent the NHS organ donor system collapsing in the wake of the hospital blunder. Parveen said: "What has happened is really sad and it brought tears to my eyes to think somebody could do such an irresponsible thing like taking children's organs without a parent's consent.

"I think the whole situation will have a terrible effect on people because they will always be wondering what other organs have been taken if they do decide to give consent for organ donation.

"It is a very sad situation for both the parents of those children whose organs were kept and for parents whose children desperately need organ transplants.

"But I would still urge people to carry donor cards because these organs save lives.

"Most doctors are very concerned about their patients and are very caring towards parents and relatives."

Blackburn Rovers fan Faizan will head for Birmingham later this month to help relaunch the National Kidney Research Young Hero awards.

The teenager won one of the bravery awards last May and donated his £1,500 prize money to Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to build a play area in Corporation Park.
