SOUTH Ribble's Sports Development Team is celebrating the success of its girls' football development programme.
The scheme was introduced to encourage girls to take part in what has been traditionally seen as a boys' sport and took the form of a ten-week coaching scheme followed by an inter-schools tournament.
The Primary Schools Girls' Football Tournament was held at Leyland's Worden High School with FA qualified coach Rob Molyneux and Lancashire FA referee Jo Ashworth.
Football mad girls from Penwortham County Primary, Kingsfold County Primary, Woodlea Junior School, Moss Side County Primary, Seven Stars County Primary and Northbrook County Primary schools took part. The winners tuned out to be Penwortham Rangers FC.
Opportunities for girls' football in South Ribble are continuing and Janet Kay, the coach at Penwortham county primary school, runs a girls' team at Priory Technical college in Penwortham.
The team welcomes new players. If you're interested call the council's Sports Development Team on (01772) 625577.
