EURO MP Terry Wynn has accused the European Union of "ripping off"consumers on big-name branded products.
The MP, whose North West constituency includes St Helens, said: "Consumers have been ripped off for far too long by the EU regulations which keep cheap, branded goods out of discount stores, even though they have been fairly bought in markets outside the EC.
"The EU is protecting big brands and everyday consumers are footing the bill. Europe should be fighting to promote free competition, not stifling it."
He added: "Fancy labels should not mask high prices. As long as they do, the European Commission is failing consumers looking for a cut-price deal.
"We need a tough call from the European Court to force open the market and give North West consumers the fair deal they deserve."
