MISS 18: Bank Clerk Diane Foster was selected as Bury's Miss 18-Plus for 1976. Diane, 24, of Sefton Street, Limefield, worked for the Midland Bank in Bury and was chosen from over 40 girls to represent the town in the regional heat of the competition.

DRINK DRIVERS: A shock report revealed that the number of drink drivers convicted in Bury in 1975 rose from 130 in 1974 to a staggering 357.

BARGAIN: The Co-op's main butcher was offering the first 250 customers a chicken dinner for four people for only £1.20. The deal included a chicken, a tin of soup, processed peas, new potatoes, cream, pears and a packet of sage and onion stuffing. Oh, and a free carrier bag!!

CENTENARIAN: It was the 100th birthday of Bury Parish Church, a century since the present building was dedicated by the then Archbishop of York. A special service marked the start of 12 month of celebrations by members of the congregation.

CHAMPIONS : The Bury Convent Grammar School Under 14 netball team became the North West champions and would go on to represent the region in the final stages of the national schools competition in April.
