A COMPANY coupling has led to a change of name for a Lowton firm -- and put them in the big league.

From April, VBG Ltd will trade as Fontaine VBG, following the purchase of the previously Sweden-owned company by the Marmon Group, which owns Fontaine International plc of Birmingham, Alabama.

Like VBG Limited Fontaine specialises in the manufacture of vehicle coupling equipment, and by joining forces the combined organisation becomes the world's second largest manufacturer of fifth wheels.

Fontaine VBG, which employs a staff of 48, will be based at the plant purpose built by VGB in Lowton three years ago.

Managing director Cliff Cook welcomed the new identity which will link the successful local company with its global parent.

He said: "I'm no stranger to name changes having seen the company I joined 21 years ago change from Dayton Walther to VBG in 1990. During this time the organisation has become the undisputed leader in the UK heavy vehicle coupling market."
