LEIGH'S unhappy outdoor market traders are to campaign on for compensation despite being told they will not get it. Their spokesman, battling Maureen Maloney, says if the inside traders and the kiosks can have damages they don't see why they can't.

The stallholders feel the new charging system, which ties them to the market is not enough, and Maureen was this week planning to write to councillors and market officers on the remaining traders' behalf. She said: "There's not many traders left to give back pay to. The situation has gone from bad to worse."

She will urge councillors to look closely at the offer, which binds the traders to the temporary Gas Street car park site, so they can win a stall on the new Union Street market.

She said: "I was told at a meeting in November that disturbance fees and compensation would be looked at and awarded accordingly. Obviously this has been overlooked.

"It may get to June or July before we are ready to be located and we deserve some back rent like the insiders. I couldn't see any one of them wanting a free stall on this site as it stands at the moment.

'I am positive if councillors came down to see Leigh market they would pay us for standing it."
