RAIN didn't stop play for council staff who defied the elements to build more play areas.

Record-breaking autumn rainfall led to only slight delays in the refurbishment programme which is now in its third year.

The council's strategy is to refurbish 55 play areas over ten years, with £480,000 from Bury's dividend as a shareholder in Manchester Airport.

Play areas to be built this current year are in Parr Lane, Unsworth; Bailey Street, Prestwich; Hollins Grundy, Hollins; Manchester Road Park, Bury; Waterside Road, Summerseat; Whalley Road, Shuttleworth; and Sunnybank Play Area.

Councillor Trevor Holt, chairman of lifelong learning, congratulated council staff for their efforts.

"The sheer amount of rain we have had to endure has meant that the ground conditions have been particularly bad and that has made life very difficult," he said.

"However, all the equipment has now been installed at four sites and work is commencing on the remaining three play areas in this year's programme following the Christmas break."

Coun Holt added: "Play is an essential part of every child's development and we are proud to provide safe and secure areas where our youngsters can enjoy themselves."
