HOUSING estates to the north of Radcliffe are taking a battering from burglars.
Police are now advising residents in the Bradley Fold and Moss Shaw Way areas of the town to be vigilant and take extra precautions to protect themselves from crime.
In the last eight weeks, more than 50 houses have been targeted by intruders with thousands of pounds worth of property stolen. Many of the properties either back on to open land or are close to it.
Break-ins are occurring at all times of the day, although the majority of burglaries were committed between 10pm and 7am. The most common method of gaining entry has been by forcing rear windows on the ground floor and patio doors.
Inspector John Higson of Radcliffe Township Police has confirmed that everything is being done to put extra officers on patrol to beat the burglars. He said: "We have been patrolling the Bradley Fold and Moss Shaw Way areas using uniformed and plain-clothed officers.
"Several arrests have already been made, although houses are still being broken into.
"We will continue to target these areas in a bid to resolve the matter."
To assist police with their operations, residents are being urged to remain vigilant and report any unusual activity, including descriptions of strangers acting suspiciously or unknown cars being driven through the estates.
Insp Higson added: "We will respond to all information received. People should not feel that they are wasting our time in contacting us.
"If it doesn't look right then please report it immediately."
Residents are also being urged to set up Neighbourhood Watch schemes as an extra deterrent to criminals.
More information on the schemes can be obtained from Mr Keith Middleton, Bury Police's Homewatch co-ordinator, on 856 8052. Security advice is also available from Radcliffe Police Station on 856 8293.
