Late Frandsen goal saves Bolton A LATE pitch inspection only just declared the much-maligned pitch at the Reebok Stadium fit for play, but Bolton manager Sam Allardyce must have wished it hadn't. For fully 90 minutes of this match, his high-flying side trailed to plucky Huddersfield Town, who belied their current league position with some excellent football.
It wasn't until the fourth minute of injury time that Per Frandsen's perfectly placed free kick hit the net to give Bolton a share of the points, which their continued persistence deserved.
The Terriers stunned their hosts with a fourth minute goal. A slip by Paul Warhurst set up Kevin Gallen, whose shot was pushed wide by Steve Banks. From the corner, however, hero Banks turned villain as a sloppy punch fed the ball to Martin Smith. The ex-Sunderland hitman made no mistake from six yards.
Twenty minutes later Smith turned provider, setting up Gallen who rounded Banks and slotted home from an acute angle.
Bolton created first half chances but found Huddersfield goalkeeper Nico Vaesen in sparkling form.
Persistent second half pressure paid off in the 59th minute when Bolton skipper Gudni Bergsson, upfield for a corner, converted Nicky Summerbee's cross with a neat header from close range. But minutes later, Banks was adjudged to have upended striker Delroy Facey in the area and Huddersfield were awarded a much-disputed penalty. Banks, however, made amends with a superb save, tipping Craig Armstrong's fierce drive over.
Bolton piled on the pressure in the last quarter, but missed chances and the immense presence of Vaersen kept them at bay. But just when all seemed lost, that man Frandsen again, as at QPR the previous week, popped up to grab an equaliser, curling a 25 yard free kick around the wall and into the top corner.
Manager Allardyce said: "It was a great game for spectators, but not for a manager's health. We were punished for defensive errors, but we dominated most of the game and deserved a result."
