A WOMAN from Hindley was in intensive care this morning after being rescued from her smoke-filled house.
Firefighters carried her semi-conscious from a blaze which left her house in Lincoln Road, Hindley, severely damaged. They gave oxygen to the woman, in her mid-20s, before she was transferred to Wigan's Royal Albert and Edward Infirmary.
But there was a lucky escape for her children who were spending the night at their grandparents' house.
The woman rang for help at around 3am on her mobile phone before being overcome by fumes. Operators were able to trace the call.
Firefighters from Hindley and Atherton spent two-and-a-half hours tackling the blaze, which was confined to the lounge of the semi-detached home. They carried the woman to safety down the stairs.
A fire investigation team are probing the cause of the blaze.
