CONTROVERSY over the burning of an alternative liquid fuel at the Ribblesdale Cement Works, Clitheroe, culminated in a full blown test case at London's High Court.
The burning of Cemfuel -- made from waste solvents and oils -- has inflamed some local residents who fear it poses a threat to the environment.
And the Environment Agency in June last year informed Castle Cement that it would classify Cemfuel as "hazardous waste" and subject both works to an extra vigilant monitoring regime.
Now, in a test case of vital importance to the cement and other industries that use Cemfuel, Castle Cement is asking a high court judge to overturn the agency's decision and make a once and for all declaration that Cemfuel is not "waste."
A hearing will continue today after a day of legal arguments yesterday.
