THORNTON CLEVELEYS U11s 1 BJFF 2 (HOGAN CUP) AFTER going 2-0 down, Thornton fought back to 2-1 with a beautiful goal from Nathan Cowgill, but BJFF proceeded to the second round.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U12s 9 SPIRIT OF YOUTH 2 THORNTON struck first through Anthony Wilson but, by the interval, had been forced to battle again for the lead after the home side equalised. Thornton produced the goods in the second half and added to their tally. Though Spirit still clung to the game as they came back to 2-4, Wilson was joined on the score sheet by Ben Beckett and Mark Adams. Michael Ambrose, foraging from defence, got himself a goal and Sam Gordon four. Man of the match went to Steven Rolinson who combined resolute defending with thoughtful link-up play. THORNTON CLEVELEYS U13s 5 YMCA 4 (HOGAN CUP) THORNTON led three times with goals from Lewis Matthews, Sean Vaughan and Brad Foulkes. YMCA fought back each time and when they took the 4-3 lead, seemed to be favourites to go through. Two late goals from Gareth Barton saw Thornton home.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U14s 2 SPIRIT OF YOUTH 2 THE first half started evenly but Spirit made a good break to finish with a great strike to make it 1-0. The second half saw Thornton start slowly which gave Spirit the chance to score another good goal. It fired them up to come back with a great goal from Chris Brundish, after some superb work from Jamie Whitewood. Thornton then struck again through Dave Almond, again after some good work from Jamie Whitewood. Spirit failed to convert a penalty after a great save from Thornton keeper Adam Hutley. Man of the match was Chris Sibbald.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U17s 5 SPIRIT OF YOUTH 2 A GUTSY performance by an extremely under-strength team. The 11 players that played, played their hearts out for TCFC. Goals came from Craig Whitewood (2), Harold Strachan, Chris Bowley and Jason Rawcliffe.
