York Acorn 30 Scorpions 8 : League Express BARLA National Cup Third Round. THE Scorpions travelled to National Conference outfit York Acorn for this third Round cup tie without five regular first teamers.
York took the lead with an unconverted try after six minutes.
The Scorpions gradually adjusted to the quicker pace of the game and after some concerted pressure they were awarded a penalty which Chris Pearson converted.
Then a rare moment in rugby league happened when the referee penalised the Scorpions scrum half Neil Gavaghan for 'feeding'. From the resulting possession York scored under the posts.
A few minutes later the referee gave another penalty against the Scorpions on the half way line for being offside. The York scrum half took a quick tap and raced down the middle of the field to score under the posts before the Scorpions defence had time to get into position. This made the score 16-2. Scorpions fought back and Ben Simpson was only prevented from scoring by a great cover tackle by the York centre after a 40 metre run. Then the Scorpions were awarded a penalty five metres from the York line. Andy Johnston took a quick tap and fed the ball to Steve Woodburn who forced his way over the line.
Chris Pearson converted the try to make it 16-8 at half-time.
The Scorpions had all the play for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Then a rare venture by York into the Scorpions half resulted in a disputed converted try.
The Scorpions were by no means outplayed by their opponents who play at a level six divisions higher.
Steve Woodburn caused problems every time he had the ball and nearly scored another try but was prevented from by a last ditch tackle by the opposing full back.
In the closing stages York scored two more tries to give them a flattering scoreline. It was a good all round team performance by the Scorpions with young Danny Webster performing well when he came on as a substitute.
