BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent is placing his trust in loan man Gareth Taylor to get the Clarets out of their current slump.

The Manchester City striker is set to land at Turf Moor today for a spell after being an unused substitute for City's FA Cup defeat at Anfield yesterday.

Manager Joe Royle delayed the move because of City's involvement in the cup but there seems no obstacle now to the former Sheffield United frontman coming to Burnley.

And he's set to go straight into the squad to face table topping Fulham at Turf Moor tomorrow night.

With Burnley struggling to score -- most notable in Saturday's1-0 defeat at relegation haunted Grimsby -- Ternent hinted that £1.1m record buy Ian Moore could make way for the new boy.

"They get themselves into good positions to score but sooner or later they have got to come up with the goods. The fact remains that we are not scoring goals," said the Burnley boss.

"The arrangement I have with Joe (Royle) is that Gareth will arrive today. It is hoped that will happen."

If Taylor had come on at Anfield yesterday it would have been his first taste of City first team action for 14 months but the 27-year-old, in the last year of his contract at Maine Road, has been banging the goals in the reserves with 12 in eight games.

"There have been a number of clubs interested in taking Gareth on loan," said Royle. "Gareth has been a good professional. He has never wanted to be out of things but that is just the way things are in football. He has got on with it and never grumbled."

Taylor couldn't have arrived at a better time with Burnley desperately needing a boost up front following the loss at Grimsby -- their eighth league defeat in ten games.

Moore started as the lone frontman but the Clarets struggled to make an impact in front of goal , skipper Steve Davis missing the best chance from four yards out. Top scorer Andy Payton was on the bench and despite coming on for the final 30 minutes he too could not break the deadlock.

And this has prompted Ternent to think about going back to 'boring' football following their run of bad form.

"Burnley fans want exciting football. They want chances and the last few games they have been given that, but we have no points.

"So I may have to go back to boring old Stan's way. I doubt it though."

And he was furious his side once more let down the travelling faithful.

"The players are well aware of what is going on. They are professional players and understand the expectation level at this club.

"Even though we will stay up in the First Division it has been very disappointing in the last few weeks.

"The place was full again with 1500-1800 of our fans and we have a duty to them.

"Some of the players are going away from where we come from."

Burnley once more missed influential midfielder Kevin Ball who sat out his second game after suffering from the flu bug and it is unsure if he will face his old club tomorrow night.

Ternent will be keeping his fingers crossed Ball can make it, to keep control of his former team-mate John Collins who returned to help the Cottagers to a 1-0 win over Notts Forest yesterday after three months out with injury.

Fulham now top the table by ten points but despite recent results, Burnley have held on to tenth spot.

Burnley's youth team beat Oldham 4-2. They came from two goals behind with Joel Pilkington, Damian Hindle (2) and Robert Grimes on target.
