A PRESTWICH woman has been awarded £200,000 compensation from Christie Hospital after they gave her husband cancer treatment he did not need.

An out-of-court settlement was accepted by Mr Brian Richardson's widow, Amanda, after the hospital trust admitted responsibility for his death nearly seven years ago.

The couple had a 10-month-old son Thomas when Mr Richardson, aged 35, died from a heart attack in July ,1994. He had received a second dose of chemotherapy which turned out to be unnecessary.

Mr Richardson had a cancerous tumour removed at North Manchester General Hospital early in 1994. Because of his age and a history of bowel cancer in his family, the chemotherapy was prescribed as a precaution.

After the first course he suffered chest pains, but despite this, doctors decided to give him a second course at the same dosage.

A spokesman for the Christie Hospital NHS Trust confirmed that the claim had been settled.

He added: "The Trust wishes to offer its condolences to Mr Richardson's family."
