A BANNED driver who blew a chance given to him by a judge after an early-hours police chase is now behind bars.
Gavin Thomas, who had driven the wrong way down a dual carriageway in a stolen car had earlier been given probation but was sent to jail for 15 months when he appeared at Burnley Crown Court and admitted breaching it.
Thomas, who, at 22, already had an eight year criminal record, was told by a judge that she hoped when he had served the sentence, he would be able to "turn the corner."
Judge Barbara Watson told the defendant it was very sad that a young man of his age had such a criminal record and one which included numerous offences related to cars.
She added the judge who had originally sentenced him after he had been convicted of aggravated vehicle taking and driving whilst disqualified had undoubtedly been giving him an opportunity to get the support and guidance which he clearly needed.
Judge Watson said Thomas, of Albert Street, Nelson, had driven at speed down the wrong side of the road and it was fortunate there had not been any very serious consequences.
