DOES anyone recall the name of the St Helens Cinema organist who went on to Blackpool Tower Ballroom fame?
The question leaps from a note sent by Stan Roberts of Wharmby Road, Haydock, who recollects being "musically startled" during a pre-war visit to the recently-demolished Rivoli Cinema.
"My dad took me", recalls Stan, "and, come the interval, there was this terrific noise emerging from the darkness behind the stage curtains.
"Then this great thing, all flashing lights, rose from the floor". It was a mighty Wurlitzer organ, playing the familiar old tune 'Colonel Bogey'.
Stan believes that the man at the keyboard became a famous broadcasting organist who played in the Tower ballroom.
BUT does anyone remember his name?
