EIGHT business-minded students from Rossall High School in Fleetwood are amazed by the success of an online guide to entertainments in Blackpool, which they only started to enter a competition.
The website -- called www.what-a-night.com -- is a complete guide to what's on offer in Blackpool, such as shows, nightclubs, restaurants, takeaways etc. It was set up by the Rossall students, aged 16-17, of which Meriel Armitage is the spokesman.
She said "We had to come up with an idea for a business to enter the Young Enterprise competition, which is a national competition encouraging students to think about how companies are marketed and how they make money . "We are very interested in the internet and with just £250 investment, we approached various companies in the town and began putting together a sort of what's on guide, which is regularly updated."
The site has already tempted The Waterfront and Fusion nightclubs to advertise, as well as the Hilton Hotel and various restaurants, takeaways, and pubs.
Meriel said they have even expanded the service so that people can receive up-to-date information on their mobile phones. She said: "We are among the first ever to provide this service. People simply send a text message, which usually consists of a few words, and in return they will be sent a list of names and telephone numbers. We rent the service off a telecommunications company called ise and it offers a fast, efficient service for people who want information at their fingertips."
The local finals of the Young Enterprise competition will be held in June, with the regional and national finals to follow. But Meriel said it wasn't all about winning: "We are really enjoying the experience and we hope it will be a real success in the future. The only worry is fitting it all in around our timetable!"
