BOGUS salesmen are targeting supporters of the crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers in a callous attempt to obtain money by deception.
Police say that several local firms have recently received calls from people claiming to be advertising sales representatives for Crimestoppers' publications.
And it is feared that the bogus sales people could be conning local businesses to advertise in various publications on the understanding that they are supporting the crime-busting good cause.
PC Andy Edwards, Lancashire's Crimestoppers co-ordinator, said: "I have personal knowledge of a number of instances where firms have been contacted asking them to support a drugs education booklet.
"They claim that it is backed by Crimestoppers and then ask them which school they would like the booklets sent to.
"If anyone has accepted this offer I would urge them to contact me either on 01772 618277 or the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111 as soon as possible so we can stop the problem." Although the charity does allow some commercial companies to put the Crimestoppers logo on products which promote the good cause -- including The Citizen newspaper which runs a weekly Crimestoppers column -- officers say the sales representatives are not associated with the charity.
The rogue sales representatives do not give their telephone number and usually cannot be traced.
If the potential advertiser asks the salesman questions or declines the invitation to take up their offer they are treated in an unprofessional manner.
Although officers have investigated the scams they have been hampered at getting the matter resolved as the callers are careful not to leave contact details.
Digby Carter, director of Crimestoppers Trust, said "These people are attacking genuine firms which may support the Crimestoppers scheme by donating to the charity.
"We would never adopt such methods and wish to make it clear that these rogues are nothing to do with us."
