COUNCILLORS in Burnley may consider providing a permanent memorial in honour of Lady Mary Towneley who died last week after a long battle against cancer.
Tributes to her charity work were paid at last night's full meeting of the council.
Members stood in two minutes' silent tribute in memory of Lady Towneley and also a former councillor and Mayor of Burnley, John Hudson, who also died recently.
Coun Roger Frost spoke of the good work Lady Mary had done in Burnley. He said: "Perhaps in the future we should consider having some sort of memorial."
Deputy mayor Eddie Fisk said Lady Towneley was highly thought of throughout the country adding: "You could never find a nicer woman."
Coun Hudson, known as Jack, had also worked tirelessly for the town.
