A DRIVER has undergone surgery after suffering leg injuries in a crash in New Line, Bacup.
Paul Gengler, 28, of Huffling Lane, Burnley, was trapped for an hour when the Renault he was driving went out of control, crossed the verge and smashed into a wall.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident which happened at about 1.30pm on Tuesday.
Sgt Eric Marshall at the traffic unit at Colne said no other vehicle was involved. A police vehicle was some distance behind the car along the road but was not in pursuit of the Renault.
The road was closed for about two and three-quarter hours as fire officers carried out the rescue followed by a police accident investigation.
Diversions were put into operation via Bacup town centre.
Mr Gengler has been detained in the intensive care unit at Burnley General Hospital following surgery to his legs.
His injuries have been described by police as not life threatening and his condition was described as comfortable.
Anyone who saw the accident or who has information is asked to contact Sgt Marshall on 01282 472431 and to leave their details on the answer-phone if there is no-one available.
