NEW police speed cameras have nicked hundreds of speeding motorists across the district in just a couple of weeks.
The camera on Westgate Road captured more than 200 speeders in just one day.
And police are claiming that the effect of the cameras can already be seen on the district's roads with more drivers sticking to the speed limits.
"We've only just started to use them on a regular basis, so it's still early days," said a traffic police spokesman.
"Up to now the number of vehicles that have been detected is quite high but I think it will even itself out. The local traffic has slowed down where the cameras are but we are aware that drivers can speed up once they've gone past them.
"To counteract this we also plan to use mobile laser patrols just before or after the cameras."
People caught speeding by the cameras will receive a fixed penalty notice and points on their licence. Excessive speeders will receive a court summons.
