TEN wards in Pendle, which are highlighted in the country's top 20 per cent most disadvantaged areas, will receive a share of more than £6 million for childcare projects.

The Department of Education and Employment plans to create 430 nursery places and 5,785 places for children out of school hours in Lancashire as part of its new "neighbourhood childcare initiative."

The county has been allocated £1.8 million for running costs and £763,250 for capital funding for the nursery places and further £3.7 million for the child minder places.

Bradley, Brierfield, Clover Hill, Horsfield, Marsden, Southfield, Vivary Bridge, Walverden, Waterside and Whitefield will be among areas to benefit.

Pendle MP Gordon Prentice said: "Childcare places are becoming more essential to parents who work or are looking to get a job.

"We can help turn this around by giving people with children the opportunities to work by setting up day care places."
