MAY I comment on the latest misery inflicted on local businesses and residents by travellers as reported in The Citizen.

As usual the Government have been all talk and no delivery when it comes to tackling the problems caused by travellers. We announced several months ago a package of commonsense measures aimed at cracking down on the nuisance and misery caused by travellers who refuse to respect the property

and privacy of others. The measures will include: A fast track, one-stop legal procedure to streamline evictions, a three month bans preventing travellers returning to a site where there has been an eviction plus any site within a set number of miles of the eviction, the withdrawal of income support from travellers subject to eviction orders who refuse to move, reforms to make it easier for landowners to gain compensation for damage to property from camps of travellers and removing the presumption in planning policy that vacant land near residential accommodation is suitable for temporary travellers' camps.
