REAL ale fans can indulge in a mellow pint of Black Cat or a draft of the alarmingly named Skullsplitter this week at the 19th Fleetwood Beer Festival.

They are just two of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) award winning beers that will be on offer at the three-day event in the Marine Hall from tonight (Thursday Febraury 22) through to Saturday.

Around one hundred different beers and ciders from some 60 of the country's 400-plus independent breweries will be on tap to help quench the thirst.

The new Blackpool Brewery, the first brewery in the town for 28 years, will be supplying some tempting tipples alongside the other local brewery, Hart, situated behind The Cartford Arms Hotel, Little Eccleston.

Other favourite beers will be in abundance including CAMRA's summer winner, Black Cat -- a 3.4% alcohol dark beer from the Moorhouse Brewery of Burnley -- and their winter winner from the Isle of Orkney, Skullsplitter -- a potent 8.3% alcohol strong ale (try it if you dare). Also on offer will be the runner-up, Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby, which is a 6% alcohol mild.

CAMRA member and event organiser Ray Jackson said: "The organising committee have tried to bring a wide selection of different styles which will include lager types, stouts, and porters plus wheat beers. "We will also have the usual cider and perry. So I hope there is something to suit everyone's taste and that everyone who attends enjoys themselves." The festival will cater not only for beer lovers, as Ray explained: "There will be food, entertainment and a children's room for the whole family. We find that people return year after year to enjoy good beer in a friendly, laid back atmosphere."

The festival will be open from 7pm to 11pm on February 22, from noon to 4pm and 7pm to 11pm on February 23 and, finally, from noon to 5pm and 7pm to 10.30pm on February 24.

There will be live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings. Admission will be £1 in the afternoons, £1.50 on Thursday and Saturday evenings and £2 on Friday evening. CAMRA members will be admitted free.

PIctured is Ray Jackson says there will be something for everyone at the festival.
