AT last I am finally convinced that we have totally lost the plot in the Town Hall.
In what must be one of the most arrogant and insensitive acts perpetrated in living memory we see the chief executive and his fellow directors accepting huge pay increases while at the same time making a large number of their workforce redundant.
They must be extremely happy to be working in an environment where seemingly they go unchallenged.
If Blackpool Council were a plc then I believe that these directors would not be benefiting from huge pay increases but would instead be explaining to very troubled shareholders the reason why they should be keeping their jobs at all.
How can they justify these rises at a time when we see our council stumbling from one crisis to another and confidence in the ability of the council to deliver at an all-time low?
Council house rents increased by more than £5 per week.
Our elderly evicted from their homes following the closure of the council rest homes in another cost saving exercise. Proposed council tax increases of around 15 per cent.
Loss of council jobs, with the likelihood of more to follow.
The closure of Beechfield day centre.
Social services staff taking industrial action out of pure frustration and in an effort to get this "listening council" to hear their voice.
The council leader talking about selling off of the council housing stock.
Much talk about the regeneration of Blackpool but very little evidence to support it.
I am sure this list is not definitive -- there is probably much that I have missed and probably still more yet to be uncovered.
May I say to councillors and the people of Blackpool -- please wake-up and smell the coffee before it is too late.
