VILLAGERS in Ainsworth could have a leading voice in shaping the future of their community and protecting its heritage.
A special team of residents could be set up to formulate a "Village Design Statement" (VDS) which would have a strong influence over anyone wanting to build on or alter the look of the village.
On Wednesday (Feb 21), a working group appointed by Ainsworth Community Association met to discuss its advantages.
The VDS is a planning tool designed to help rural settlements where there is little design advice based on local character.
Much antagonism to new developments in villages like Ainsworth comes about because of the inappropriate character of the development, rather than the development itself.
But a VDS can build a better understanding between the village community, the local planning authority, developers and designers.
It lets developers know exactly what would be acceptable to a community and consequently prevents arguments and long, drawn-out wrangling. Association founder member Mr George Parker said: "A VDS describes the physical character of the village as it is now, through the eyes and experience of local people. For them the village is much more than a collection of individual buildings, space, streets and trees, it is the material heart of the community."
He added: "If villagers are concerned that the current procedures may not be sufficient alone to protect and enhance the quality and distinctiveness of their village then a VDS can be a positive way forward to demonstrate how local character can count in the design of new developments."
Wednesday's meeting, which lasted all day, was sponsored by the Countryside Agency. Delegates included Radcliffe Area Board chairman Coun Barry Briggs, Bury South MP Ivan Lewis, council officials and village representatives.
Mr Lewis said he was delighted to have helped the association bring the initiative to fruition.
He said: "This is an exciting opportunity for the Ainsworth Community. Having a design statement will allow local people to develop a vision for the long-term future that can help to shape not only the physical environment but the social and economic development of the area."
The next step is a public meeting for the people of Ainsworth on April 4. Residents and interested parties will be told how a VDS would benefit the village and asked to appoint a VDS team. A draft document designed by the whole community through debate, negotiation and consultation would then be drawn up.
Mr Parker said: "We are guardians of Ainsworth's heritage. It is our responsibility, collectively and individually to preserve, protect and help develop it in an appropriate way."
The April 4 meeting will be held in the Unitarian School Room , Knowsley Road, Ainsworth and will start at 7.30pm.
