ROVERS RES 2 MAN UTD RES 0 ROVERS midfielder Burton O'Brien put himself in the shop window last night with a goal for the reserves against Manchester United.

The former St Mirren player, who is on the transfer list, scored a second half goal to secure the win in difficult conditions.

Rovers were playing only their second competitive game for nine weeks against a United side which included the likes of Dwight Yorke, David May and Phil Neville.

Reserve team coach Terry Darracott said he was pleased with the performance.

"We haven't played many games because of the Christmas break and the bad weather but the lads have come back really well.

"There was a lot of good football played but Alan Kelly hardly had a save to make which showed how well we played defensively."

United dominated the first 15 minutes but Rovers got back into it and scored late in the first half through 19-year-old striker Marc Richards after a Jimmy Corbett strike was parried by the United keeper.

In swirling wind after the break, Rovers were virtually camped in their own half but United failed to create many clear cut chances.

In a rare break-away, Rovers doubled their lead when O'Brien raced on to a Marc Keller cross and headed in at the far post.
