THE family of a man who fell from the second floor of Nelson bus station today said they are shocked by his death.
Mehfooz Hussain, 33, of Lune Street, Colne, suffered multiple injuries in the fall and died an hour later in Burnley General Hospital.
Today his brother Mahsood Hussain, 28, said the family had been shocked by the news of his death.
He said: "Mehfooz had been suffering from depression for about a year but we had absolutely no idea this was going to happen. If anything, we thought he was getting better.
"We saw him the night before and he was fine. You wouldn't think he was going to get up and do something like this.
"His wife is devastated and his parents are really gutted. I will really miss him."
Mahsood said his brother had been visiting their parents' house, in Earl Street, Colne, on a regular basis for the last couple of weeks and had said goodbye to his family before leaving his home on the morning of his death.
A former pupil at Primet High School, Colne, Mahfooz had a ten-year-old daughter Afiya, three sisters and two brothers.
His wife was today still too upset to speak about the incident and was being comforted by his parents.
Police were called to the bus station at around 10.20am on Wednesday where they found the victim lying in the exit of the Sagar Street end of the bus station.
Paramedics stabilised Mr Hussain at the scene and he was taken to hospital wearing a neck brace.
A police spokesman said: "We are treating this as a non-suspicious death and we are not, at this stage, making any further inquiries into it."
Ron Loebell was repairing the lights on the bus station for Lancashire County Council when Mr Hussain fell to his death.
Mr Loebell said: "We were having a cup of tea when we heard a lot of commotion and about eight police officers went running down the bus station.
"The lad was lying on the floor on his back. The paramedics were there within a matter of minutes and put him in a neck brace and he was still moving then."
The bus exit route on that side of the bus station was already cordoned off for the engineering work being carried out by Lancashire County Council and the police directed traffic around the area for around one hour.
YESTERDAY we intended to carry a report of Mr Hussain's tragic death. Unfortunately, because of production difficulties, it was omitted. We apologise for any distress caused.
