READING the court reports/lists for Leigh I am struck by the lack of seriousness taken by the bench in cases of driving without insurance.

Anyone killed or injured by a driver without insurance has their life ruined and the only remedy in law is to sue the feckless driver who, if driving without insurance, is unlikely to have any assets, and the criminal injuries compensation is derisory.

An automatic custodial sentencing policy would quickly reduce incidence of this most serious offence.

Perhaps the magistrates would care to explain any constraints put on them in this regard.
