DAMP, mould-covered walls are making life a misery for a pregnant Radcliffe woman and her two-year-old son.

And Miss Susan Tan has criticised Bury Council for failing to sort out the problem in her first floor flat in Kirkstall Gardens.

"There's damp and mould in every room and it really smells. I moved in just over two years ago and since that time the damp has been getting worse.

"I phoned the council but all they did was paint part of the wall, but now that's where the mould has grown."

Her son, Calvin, has become chesty, which Miss Tan blames on the damp.

He is also suffering from a painful rash which Miss Tan, pictured with her son, again blames on the council. "On Wednesday last week some workmen came to sort out the roof. They arrived with a big roll of fibreglass insulation but they never returned to do the job leaving me stuck with it in the flat.

"The roll was already open and there are warnings on it saying not to go near, but you can't help passing it because it takes up so much space. I've got itchy eyes because of it and Calvin came out in a terrible rash. I had to take him to the doctor's because of it."

A council spokesman said that condensation had been identified as the cause of the damp and fungal problem.

"Additional vents have already been installed in the property and advice given to the tenant about the need for proper ventilation."

Of the insulation, he said: "The glass fibre insulation was left for work to be carried out but unfortunately the start of work was delayed."

He said the council had received a call to move it, but Miss Tam's partner had said he would do it. Days later the council offered again but Miss Tam said she first wanted her local councillor to see it."
