THE Bedford (Leigh) Band was a victim of its own success.
It was a big blow when the best of brass and former national champions, broke up in 1992 following the loss of players to the country's top bands.
Now, almost a decade later, members hope to relive the camaraderie and take a trip down memory lane.
They have organised a reunion for May 26 at Leigh Miners' Club, and all ex-members are invited to polish up their instruments.
The band was formed in 1875 by parishioners at St Thomas's Church, Leigh, and took its original name, St Thomas' Band Bedford, from the church.
It started competing in 1884 and on December 1 that year formally drew up its constitution and registered with the Friendly Society as The Bedford Church Brass Band.
The band had a prolific contest record in the 1980s, laid down by conductor Alan Hobson in the 70s and continued by Alan Marsh in the early 1980s, culminating under the musical direction of Malcolm Brownbill who took them from 4th section in 1983 to championship section in 1985.
They were runners-up in the 4th section national finals in 1983, section national champions in 1994 and runners-up in the 2nd section national finals in 1985.
Over the period from 1980-86 they competed in 25 contests securing 14 first places and nine seconds.
Tony Hodgetts, who is organising the reunion, is also appealing for any historical information on the band.
He can be contacted for tickets on 01942 608898 or to book on line contact the band's website at www.BedfordBand.co.uk where many old photographs can be seen.
