POLICE are still hunting the "callous and dangerous" thugs who robbed disabled Tyldesley man Alan Proudlove as he lay defenceless in his bed.

As reported exclusivley in the Journal last week, wheelchair-bound stroke victim Mr Proudlove, 56, watched in horror as masked burglars rifled through his bedroom. Mr Proudlove could not even call for help because his speech has been affected by the heart attack he suffered some years ago.

The shocking story has provoked anger against the cruel burglars who broke in to his council flat, armed themselves with kitchen knives then systematically searched his belongings before rifling his pockets and stealing money, a hi-fi and valuables.

Horrified Hindsford councillor Graham Lingings has called for anyone who has any information to contact the police.

Cllr Lingings, a member of Wigan's community safety panel, said: "Someone must know who has done this and I am baffled as to why they don't come forward with information which will lead to a conviction.

"The public have got to realise they are a necessary third party who should be vigilant and help stamp out this sort of thing. They can't just leave it to the police and local authority."

Even Mr Proudlove's cigarettes and lighter were stolen by the thugs as well as a £400 black Technics stereo system with multi-CD player, a gold sovereign ring his daughter had bought him for Christmas, CDs, a blue Nokia 5210 mobile phone and gas and TV licence stamps.

Cllr Lingings added: "I know the type of people we are dealing with in cases like this and for their own safety I would strongly advise anyone not to confront intruders should they be unfortunate enough to find themselves in a similar situation."

Anyone with information should ring Leigh police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
