RECENTLY I visited Bury Art Gallery to view the Wrigley collection.
I am not knowledgeable about art, but I did enjoy looking at the paintings etc. Equally pleasing was the layout and atmosphere of the galleries themselves.
Afterwards, I stepped outside and came upon the other "Wrigley" collection, completely different but on permanent display in a variety of shades and textures. It is there on the pavement, in the road, down the side street, round a back street. In fact, anywhere and everywhere you go. What a sight.
Isn't it time for 100 per cent VAT to be stuck on chewing gum? Football managers would still be able to afford it and, even if VAT doesn't act as a complete deterrent to other purchasers, perhaps the extra revenue could be channelled towards the cost of cleaning-up the stuff, where this is feasible, like the art gallery steps for instance!
I once went to Russia. The travel operator's information advised: "Take chewing gum with you; they can't get it there". They don't know what they are missing!
