ROVERS RESERVES 0 ROVERS young defence had to be at their best to deny FA Premier Reserve League leaders Sunderland maximum points at New Ferens Park.
Battling Blackburn kept the lively Black Cats forward line at bay, most notably stopping Republic of Ireland midfielder Thomas Butler who was Sunderland's star of the show.
Jeff Kenna, Martin Taylor, Marlon Broomes and David McNamee all peformed well in the backline with transfer-listed keeper John Filan doing his best when called upon.
"It was a smashing game, and it was very good standard," said reserve team manager Terry Darracott.
"We took a young side there and it was a real team effort by us.
"All credit to the lads, we matched them and it was a hard-earned point against a good side."
Butler gave a sign of what was to come inside the first 15 minutes with a 30-yard shot that was tipped over the bar by Filan.
Sunderland dominated the opening half and livewire striker Michael Proctor could have scored two goals in the opening 45 minutes.
Butler, Michael Proctor and Danny Dichio all went close in the second half but Sunderland failed to find a way past the strong Rovers back four.
Blackburn's best chance fell to youngster Neil Danns who was put clean through but Sunderland keeper Jurgen Macho saved well at his feet.
