SHOPPERS would be willing to "spend a penny" if it meant an improvement in town centre toilet provision, a meeting heard.

Residents had expressed disgust at the lack of proper facilities in Bury's shopping centre at last Thursday's (Feb 22) Bury West area board meeting.

They claimed that the proposed "superloo" to be sited in Kay Gardens was impractical to serve the needs of the shoppers.

Councillor Roy Walker said: "Bury is supposed to be a tourist attraction and shopping centre. Why can't this town have adequate toilets when others can?"

Bury town centre has only one toilet in the Mill Gate Centre and those available at Bury Interchange.

Cllr Walker suggested: "Why not have toilets with attendants? People could use them for a small charge."

His idea was welcomed by the meeting.

Coun Walker added: "Having 30 people queuing in Kay Gardens to use one toilet is an unattractive proposition."

The area board agreed to forward its concerns to Bury Council and pledged to ensure that there would be adequate toilet provision for the disabled.
