A FALKLANDS War veteran has been reunited with the medals which were stolen from his home.

Thomas McDermott's medals were handed in at a police station in Horwich last Tuesday following an appeal in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph and its sister paper the Bolton Evening News.

Mr McDermott, 44, of Blackburn Road, Edgworth received the medals for service both in the Falklands and the Gulf Wars and the Iran-Iraq conflict.

They were taken last Thursday along with a video recorder, digital phone and £100 cash, leaving Mr McDermott with small replicas.

The medals were a Falklands Island Medal which is silver on a multi-coloured ribbon, a hexagonal medal of solid silver, a gold service medal on a red, yellow and blue striped ribbon and a silver commendation medal awarded by the Sultan of Oman for his his part in putting out a tanker fire in the Iran-Iraq conflict in 1986.

Detective Sergeant Neil Hunter of Darwen CID said he was pleased the former submariner's medals were handed in.

"These medals meant everything to Mr McDermott and I personally am glad they were returned.

"It goes to show the power of the press when people see articles such as this."
