MRS Irene Fogarty (Letters, February 19) claimed to welcome moves to eradicate hunting with hounds "along with the majority of the population."

Where is the evidence for this statement? Perhaps, living in a relatively rural area, my own impresions are quite the opposite in that the "majority of the population" hereabouts are sick and tired of the meddlesome attitude of New Labour.

It remains to be seen, but I think a ban on hunting with hounds will prove unenforceable. One certain consequence is easy to predict -- more animals will be killed as a result because foxes and mink will decimate the prey species populations.

It is a pity that water voles, new born lambs and game birds cannot club together and all chip in for a donation to New Labour, unlike the animal righs paymasters.

For the rest, I heartily agree with Mrs Fogarty in condemning unnecessary experiments on animals. It is decadent to torment animals merely to test cosmetics and the like.

However, some animal experiments do benefit humans and, ironically, they also benefit some animals.
