GERMAN cut-price food giant Lidl was due to open its store in Nelson today.

The 1,100 sq metre store will operate from the former Ford Seed car showrooms and former Royal Mail sorting office site in Rigby Street and was expected to create 20 new jobs in the town.

It will also provide 100 parking spaces and six dedicated car parking spaces for Rigby Street residents.

Pendle Borough Council first gave permission in principle for a food store more than five years ago and seven months ago gave the go-ahead to Scandanavian cut-price food group Netto.

Netto pulled out, leaving the way open for Lidl, which already has stores in Church and Blackburn.
