IN a bid to go green, Pendle's councillors will be asked to consider providing council employees with a loan to convert their vehicle to run on Liquid Petroleum Gas.
Members of the Personnel and Equal Opportunities Sub-Committee will discuss the idea tonight as part of the Local Agenda 21.
The council has developed an internal Sustainability Action Plan considering a range of issues across the Council's Service Area.
At a meeting of the council's Green Champions, there was a discussion about the issues of converting council vehicles to Liquid Petroleum Gas, as well as suggestions to encourage council employees to convert their own cars.
A report to the sub-committee said one of the problems associated with the conversion was the lack of suppliers locally because of a lack of demand.
Solutions suggested by the operational services manager, included the possibility of storing LPG at the depot and supplying not only to his own vehicles but also to employees. And also approaching local garages to discuss LPG plans.
The advantages of using LPG include an improvement on exhaust emissions and a reduction in running costs but the cost of conversion is around £1,500.
