BELLRINGERS are ap-peal-ing to ceilidh fans in the Leigh area for help.

The Newton St Peter's Church group are aiming to reach a target of £60,000 to prevent their ring falling silent.

They have organised a fun-d raiser at Lowton Civic Hall on Saturday, March 10, from 7.30pm featuring the Kamikaze Ceilidh Band which plays country and western and Irish music.

For the bellringers Lilian De Looze said: "We have had an offer to add two further bells to the eight we already have, which will give us a splendid ring of 10 bells.

"However to make room for the two extra the whole installation needs to be relocated, extended and refurbished.

"After completing this work the bell tower will be in good condition for the 21st century and beyond. The whole scheme is likely to cost £60,000.

"The present bells were installed in 1901 and are rung every Sunday before services.

"We hope to complete the augmentation work in time for the Queen's golden jubilee in February 2002.

"We are sure that the people of the town would want the sound of church bells to be heard in years ahead. We are reluctant to let them fall silent and we are doing all we can to make sure we pass them on to succeeding generations in good condition."

Tickets for the event are £8.50 including a hot pot supper. To book ring 01942 744721 or 675508 after 6pm or 01925 226017.
