PRIMARY schools will be reviewed by St Helens Council so that money can be used more effectively to improve resources.
The move follows a 14 per cent drop in the local birth rate since 1992, combined with an overall fall in the population, which has led to a fall in school rolls.
Now, up to 25 per cent of some primary schools are classed as 'empty' and could be losing out on a significant slice of funding.
At a meeting of St Helens Council's Executive Committee, councillors approved a series of local area reviews and a full consultation process.
Councillor Andy Bowden, Portfolio Member for Lifelong Learning, said: "The issue of falling pupil rolls is one facing many local authorities and we want to ensure we make the best possible use of resources. The review will take place with the fullest possible consultation between teachers, parents and governors.
