MORE than a generation of dedication to a local ensemble has ended on a high note for a popular and melodious maestro.
Emrys Jones (74) has laid down his baton for the last time after serving as musical director with St Helens Choral Society since 1968.
In that period, the choir went from strength to strength, with its most memorable performance probably being a rendering of Handel's 'Messiah' in St Helens Town Hall during the golden jubilee year of 1999. Other strings to Mr Jones' musical bow include teaching the subject at Noctorum High School; singing with Liverpool Welsh Choral Society when its conductor was Malcolm Sargent; and being organist and choirmaster at St Helens Parish Church.
A season ticket holder with Liverpool FC, Emrys and his wife Hazel also enjoy holidaying in Wales.
Said St Helens Choral Society chairperson Jean Cavendish: "We are all going to miss him very much, and wish both Emrys and Hazel a long and happy retirement."
