A TEENAGE student is said to be recovering well after being struck down with meningitis.
Chris Rowe, 17, of Elisabeth Street, Whitewell Bottom, Rossendale, was rushed into hospital at midnight on Saturday when it was suspected he was suffering from the deadly brain bug disease.
Chris, who attends All Saints RC High School, Rawtenstall, has been transferred from the high dependency unit into a ward at Burnley General Hospital and hopes to be back home within days.
His parents, Graham and Geraldine, have spent much of the past few days at his bedside. Chris has a brother and three sisters. His mum has sat with him every night.
Graham said: "It started last Thursday when he complained of severe headaches, ear infection and a sore throat.
"He got worse on Saturday night. The doctor came out and got him straight into hospital."
Chris's condition gave cause for concern. Graham said: "It was confirmed that he had the more serious strain of the disease. He has been a lucky lad in that he is now making a good recovery.
"The doctors and all the staff at the hospital were absolutely brilliant. We have nothing but praise for them."
Chris, who used to play soccer for Waterfoot juniors and Rossendale United juniors, works part-time at a local Mercedes garage where he is to take up an apprenticeship.
