A WOMAN from Garstang miraculously escaped serious injury after an accident on the M6 in which the car she was driving overturned yesterday evening (Wednesday, February 28).

Mrs Pat Ascroft, 63, from Dorchester Road, Garstang, was driving a blue Ford Fiesta when the accident happened at around 4.40pm just before junction 30 on the M6 north bound carriageway.

She was taken by ambulance to Royal Preston Hospital but, in a stroke of luck, only suffered cuts and bruises and minor injuries.

Inspector Steve Sansbury, force incident manager for Lancashire Police, said the vehicle was in a terrible state after overturning, after the accident involving one or two light goods vehicles.

He said: "The car ended up on its roof and two lanes were closed. A 30ft stretch of the central barrier was also damaged."

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue said: "We were called to the scene and although we did not have to release the woman we did use one hose reel and had to use Dammit and Sphagsorb to absorb some petrol which was leaking on to the road."

Accident investigators attended the scene on Wednesday evening and were trying to determine the cause of the accident, and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information should contact PC Clarke at the Motorway Police Unit at Samlesbury on 01772 410466.
