Set-piece watch
Burnley had five corners during the match with four different takers. Glen Little and Paul Cook both tried deep kicks to the far post with no joy while John Mullin and Lee Briscoe attempted short corner routines with more success but still no reward.
Technical Talk
Graham Branch was pushed further forward acting as a third striker at times on the left as Ian Moore and Gareth Taylor tried to press forward in the early stages. Portsmouth used three strikers on the Clarets trio of defenders which caused Burnley a few problems.
Turning Point
The penalty given in the 69th minute seemed harsh on Clarets defender Gordon Armstrong but once Mike Panopoulos converted it to make it 2-0 there was only going to be one winner. The spot kick made the three points safe for new boss Graham Rix.
