COUNCILLORS have agreed in principle to the release of Hargher Clough recreation ground as the site of a proposed new primary school and neighbourhood learning centre, if that is the option chosen by Lancashire County Council.
A site in Melrose Avenue is also being considered.
The proposed new school and centre is part of a shake-up of primary school provision in the area to replace existing schools at Myrtle Bank, Hargher Clough and Coal Clough.
The neighbourhood learning centre will provide life long learning opportunities for local residents and together will represent £2 million investment in the area.
The recreation and leisure committee agreed to release the land if that was the site chosen.
Coun Harry Brooks commented: "There is still a debate about whether it should be Melrose Avenue or Hargher Clough.
"It would be wrong for this committee to rule out the Melrose Avenue site."
