A HOMELESS Romanian found on the motorway was walking to Manchester to look for a job, a court heard.
Burnley Magistrates were told how Basilica Bursuc, 32, had been spotted by police with his back to the traffic on the hard shoulder on the westbound carriageway of the M65.
He was put in a police car for his own safety.
Bursuc, of no fixed address, admitted walking on the motorway and was conditionally discharged for 12 months.
Chris Squibbs, defending, said Bursuc, who was on benefits had been walking to Manchester to look for work.
He was walking because he knew no other way to get there.
He had no money and had been in the area after being brought by a friend. Mr Squibbs added there was no suggestion the defendant's behaviour was causing a major problem to road users. He had been detained, had co-operated fully with the police and had spent the best part of the afternoon and night in custody.
